Fearing Japan would become powerful enough, to invade the Soviet Union, the Soviet Union under Joseph Stalin, sent some army soldiers into Mongolia, to help Mongolia defeat Japan. In which the Soviet Unions and Japan’s forces, would battle each other. In September, the battle of Khalkin Gol, happened. In which Japanese soldiers would fight some Mongolian soldiers and 58,000 Soviet Union soldiers, in Mongolia. In the battle 8,000 Soviet Union soldiers became missing or killed. Japan would lose the battle. Soon after Japan would retreat from Mongolia.

In August 1939, the Soviet Union under Joseph Stalin and Germany, signed the non-aggression pact. A name applying no war, between the nations. The treaty secretly agreed, that both sides will accept Germany invading and conquering western Poland. As well as the Soviet Union invading eastern Poland.
By September, the Red army(Soviet Union’s army) had 1,800,000 soldiers.
Also in September, Germany invaded Poland. Then captured western Poland. That began World War 2 in Europe. Soon in that month of September, the Soviet Union under Joseph Stalin, invaded eastern Poland:

Also in September, Germany invaded Poland. Then captured western Poland. That began World War 2 in Europe. Soon in that month of September, the Soviet Union under Joseph Stalin, invaded eastern Poland:
The amount of soldiers invading was 500,000 soldiers. They would battle Polish soldiers and win. Then Eastern Poland was captured and made a part of the Soviet Union, or at least unofficially. As well as the Soviet Union’s States, of Belarus and Ukraine. A large amount of the former Polish people, that became a part of the Ukrainian and Belarusian states, were culturally Ukrainian and Belarusian. This all made eastern Poland go from capitalist, to communist and Marxist. As well as the Soviet Union, which was under Joseph Stalin’s dictatorship, more powerful. 10,000 Soviet Union soldiers would go missing, wounded, or killed, in the invasion.
There were 1,000s of captured Polish officers(army leaders), by the Soviet Union, from the Soviet invasion of Poland. They were secretly killed by the Soviet Union under Joseph Stalin, in the Katyn massacre. One possible excuse for this, was that the officers were probably rich people.
The Soviet Union under Joseph Stalin, would allow lower class people, to kill rich, in captured Polish territory. Resulting in certain Polish people killing many rich people, in total.
There were culturally Polish people, that could rebel against the Soviet Union, to make Poland independent. The Soviet Union under Joseph Stalin, sent Polish priest and bishops to the gulags, or execution. As the priest and Bishops, promoted Christianity, which was against the Soviet Union’s belief of atheism.
The Soviet Union under Joseph Stalin, got 283,000 culturally Polish people. Then deported them to regions, with very cold or hot climates, in the Soviet Union. Then the land of the deported, was made into collective farms. Then Soviet people, who were members of the communist party, got to live in the collective farms. This deportation, was possibly done in part, to have more room for the Soviet people, who’s population was increasing due to breeding.
In November of 1939, Joseph Stalin believed it was possible that the Soviet Union could get invaded by Germany. A nation the Soviet Union under Joseph Stalin, just helped conquer Poland. So, believing the nation Finland might help Germany in the believed possible invasion. The Soviet Union under Joseph Stalin, decided to try getting Finland to give up some its nation, to the Soviet Union, the Karelian territory. The Karelian territory had about 400,000 Finnish people and was right next to the Russian city Leningrad. So, therefore soldiers could be sent from the territory, to Leningrad. So, the Soviet Union leaders lied and said that Finland bombed 4 Soviet Union soldiers. The Soviet Union demanded the Karelian territory, become a part of the Soviet Union. The offer was refused by Finland. So the Soviet Union under Joseph Stalin invaded Finland. This started the winter war.
The winter war was also planned, to make Finland a communist vassal nation(a nation with another one having some control over it), of the Soviet Union. Finland banned communist political parties, which was possibly one of the excuses for the war.
The Soviet Union did an airstrike on a Finnish city, killing 97 Finnish civilians, which the Soviet Union newspapers didn’t mention. The Soviet Union invaded Finland, with 450,000 Soviet Union soldiers. The soldiers were poorly fed, or at least for the energy needed for fighting war. Often when Soviet Union soldiers, made a small group of Finnish soldier’s retreat, in a battle, the Soviet Union soldiers ate their abandoned food. Then they were ambushed, by other Finnish soldiers.
At first Soviet Union soldiers, fought Finnish soldiers and captured and occupied Finnish territory. In December, the Soviet Union forces, started to be halted. In January 1940, in the battle of Raate, Finnish forces ambushed Soviet forces trying to capture Finnish territory. In the battle 7,000-8,000 Soviet soldiers died.
In order to try making him not look like he had done a terrible decision, starting the war. Joseph Stalin lied to his people by saying that the reason that the Soviet Union hadn’t won, was because America sent fighter planes, against the Soviet Union, in the war.
More Soviet Union soldiers, were sent to fight in the winter war. The Soviet Union soon captured a small amount of territory, in the 2nd battle of Summa. Soon after, Finland signed a peace treaty, with the Soviet Union. In the treaty they agreed to give up the Karelian territory to become a part of the Soviet Union. The about 400,000 Finnish people in the Karelian territory, had to move to the rest of Finland. With 200,000 people from Belarus and Russia immigrating there. Finland was also not made into a puppet nation, of the Soviet Union. 10,000s of Soviet Union soldiers, died in the war.

These nations were also called known as Baltic nations. Out of wanting protection and or fear of the Soviet Union, the Baltic nations agreed. However, the Soviet Union under Joseph Stalin, then sent the soldiers to capture the nations. Then they were made a part of the Soviet Union, which was under communism and Joseph Stalin’s dictatorship. This also made the Soviet Union more powerful. The 3 regions, which had their own culture, got their own states known as republics, within the Soviet Union.
Then the Soviet Union under Joseph Stalin, threatened Romania with war, unless they gave the Soviet Union the Romanian regions of Bessarabia and Northern Bukovina. Romania then gave the regions to become a part of the Soviet Union. This new territory, along with the small amount of territory off the Ukrainian State, made up of culturally Moldavian people. Would form the Soviet Union’s republic\state of Moldavia.

In 1940, something that would get news coverage, in the Soviet Union. Would be Germany, in World War 2, invading, capturing and occupying, Belgium, the Netherlands, Demark, Norway and northern France. With the rest of France( which controlled its colonies), surrendering to become a of Germany. Leaving only Britain fighting Germany directly.
Germany and their ally Italy would become more powerful, after invading and conquering the Slavic nation, Yugoslavia. Made up mainly of the cultural regions, Serbia, Bosnia and Croatia.
